Vintage MX roars in to Log Road MX

Story and photos by Bart Newman

Log Road MX owner Jeff Beerbower, has been a Vintage MX racer, fan, and if you ask his wife Cathy a ferocious collector, of vintage motocross for years. That passion for the sport as spilled over to the track and this season, the first Vintage MX event on tap is Log Road’s traditional AHRMA Great Lakes Regional event on the Monday of Memorial Day weekend. This event always has a large turn out of both AHRMA and District 14 Vintage MX riders. Log Road MX runs a limited schedule of regular AMA District 14 classes and the track is specially set up for the Vintage riders and Post Vintage riders. A large contingent of Vintage riders make this a must do event for all Midwest Vintage participants.

In addition to the pair of stops that AMA District 14 Vintage series makes to the Log Road facility one which is the AHRMA Great Lakes Regional out lined above. The second is on Monday September 1st the last of three big days of Log Road MX racing on Labor Day weekend. Log Road MX has also put together three bonus dates that will not only include our AHRMA Vintage National, and District 14 Vintage MX dates but also Sunday, June 22nd, Saturday, August 2nd and Sunday, September 21st that will make up the AHRMA Great Lakes Vintage MX Series at Log Road MX. These dates three additional dates will be run in the morning before our regularly scheduled Log Road MX open riding events practice will start at 8:30 am and we will be done no later than 11:30am with the whole Vintage MX racing program. How cool is that come in early ride on a prepped Vintage MX friendly track and be done motoing before noon.

An AHRMA National MX event on July 12 & 13th is definitely the headliner of our Log Road MX Vintage season and it should be a great old school event. The guys’ girls running the machines that were built in 1974 and older take to the track on Saturday, July 12th. Day two will be for post vintage bikes for bikes built in 1975 and older. The AHARMA National weekend legend that will be honored is the late Maico rider Jim West who was injured during the first moto of the Cycle World International, a round of the Trans AMA Series at the old Saddleback Park Motocross Track in Irvine, California, on 30 November 1975. West was running seventh when his motorcycle hit a large kicker throwing him into the air. According to witnesses, West fell backwards off the Macio directly landing on his back. He died about an hour later during emergency surgery at Chapman General Hospital. The cause of death was listed as massive internal injuries. The event was won by teenage rider Tony Distefano in a Suzuki.

We at Log Road MX have worked long and hard to put together a great year of events for the vintage friendly racer and early reviews say we may have pulled it off. If you are a vintage motocross fan this is one series you’ll want to be a part of, old bikes, good friends, cool events and the race coverage that our riders deserve.
